Award for Best Traction Innovation of the year!

SnoClaws in Season All The Time!
By The Review Crew

SnoClaws... what a name. They should be called the Golden Claws. They work in snow, mud, sleet, sand.. so don't think you are buying them for the winter and that's it. No, you'll be keeping them in the trunk, under your seat... They are like American Express; don't leave home with out it.

So what's the deal? Simple to install you don't have to jack up your tires, you don't have to deal with freezing cold chains in nasty weather. No you just click them together and slide them on, there are a few methods that make it easy to do. One method even lets you put them on without getting on your hands and knees!

They are cheap, they come in three different sizes that fit _any_ type of vehicle (even Hummers), they are durable and provide a much smoother ride than typical tire chains.

They clean themselves, tension themselves, in fact, the only thing they don't do is jump out of your car and get on your tires by themselves (They are probably working on it!).

The Army uses them, Police, Emergency Services, Beach Patrols, they use them. In fact they are great on just about any vehicle even farm tractors and 4-wheelers.

We highly recommend them. If you want to check out their website go to http://www.flextrax.com  , they have a full video demonstration online so you can see what is involved in putting them on your vehicle.

One tip, you might want to order some BEFORE winter, when the season comes they could be hard to find!

3 out of 3 stars for the SnoClaws and I'm going to have to go ahead and give them the 2004 Editor's Choice Award for Best Traction Innovation of the year.

Road-friendlier alternative to tire chains rolling out

GoClaws, a revolutionary alternative to traditional tire chains for maneuvering in snow, mud or sand, is gaining distribution after being introduced at Cabela's in late 2003.

The product, sold at Canadian Tire and soon to be available online at Sears, Sam's Club and Costco, involves a rubberlike cover that attaches to a tire. The gripping material, called Duratanium, features hydraulic gripping chambers that grab snow, mud or ice and throw it behind the moving vehicle. GoClaws are clog-resistant and self-cleaning.

With many states and some Canadian provinces outlawing the use of chains because of the damage they can cause to roads, GoClaws provides a new alternative, said Jeff Ritchie, a spokesman for Flex-Trax of Tennessee, the product's manufacturer.

"The feedback has been very positive," said Ritchie regarding retailer response. "It really is a revolutionary product when it comes to the technology it uses."

A set of GoClaws sells for $169 to $269, compared with $50 to $150 for tire chains, with the higher price supported in part by a lifetime warranty.

Use GoClaws™, the revolutionary “Alternative Traction Device”, this winter instead of traditional tire chains or cables. GoClaws™ use Pascal-Tech™ hydraulic gripping chambers to literally grip snow, mud or sand and cleanly eject it for a safe and secure drive. This perpetual gripping and releasing process is a natural result of the application of Pascal’s Law of Physics, regarding the characteristics of fluids under pressure.

GoClaws™ are manufactured with a long-wearing material called Duratanium™, a high performance polymer developed to be highly abrasive and cut resistant. GoClaws™ are self-cleaning, self-centering, self-tensioning, and easily installs in minutes, even if the vehicle is already stuck.

Aimed at Improving Safety/Security on Snow, Mud & Sand: Revolutionary ``GoClaws'' Tire Accessory Significantly Improves Driving In Hazardous Conditions

GoClaws Can Be Put on Your Tires While Stuck; Easy-to-Install Traction System Makes for Safer Driving for Vehicles on Highways or in Off-Road Situations

A revolutionary new product, GoClaws(TM), that is hitting the market today is the latest and best scientific approach to avoid being stuck in heavy snow, mud or sand while providing for improved personal and vehicle safety during hazardous driving conditions. GoClaws can be put on your tires in minutes without moving or jacking up the vehicle, even while stuck. Designed for highway and off-road driving for vehicles ranging from compact cars to tandem tractor-trailers, this unique and revolutionary safety and security traction system is being introduced today by Flex-Trax, Inc. of Bristol, Tenn.

"GoClaws is the culmination of many years of design and development by Flex-Trax. The traction advancement is based on proven techniques of mechanical engineering, physics, material handling, and hydraulics. This advanced engineering design, coupled with the use of revolutionary Duratanium(TM), the very best high-performance injection-molded material available, produces an extremely tough product," said Mike Stollings, President of Flex-Trax Inc. Stollings added that the high-performance, patented product, also features dual zinc-coated steel fastener pins and carries a limited lifetime warranty.

Available in three sizes each for both the consumer and commercial markets, each package of GoClaws offers six adjustable, interchangeable modules that provide traction for two tires. Stollings said consumers could use them for either rear- wheel or front-wheel drive vehicles. In cases where off-roading and severe weather conditions exist, sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and all-wheel drive (AWDs) vehicles are advised to use GoClaws on all four tires, he explained.

Stollings said that because of the engineering design, GoClaws offers the user several benefits in addition to the peace of mind it provides. First, he said, they are easier and faster to install once set up for the respective tire of choice versus the chains typically used. They are self-cleaning (chambers eject accumulations), self-tracking (for keeping centered on tires) and self-tensioning (continuously tightening). GoClaws are easily cleaned and fold up for easy and compact storage. GoClaws utilizes high-performance Duratanium(TM) track segments with Pascal-Tech(TM) hydraulic gripping chambers laid out in a crossing grid formation, which is placed over the tire. Connected by adjustable dual-pin linkages, the durable product's chambers create hydraulic pressure causing a gripping reaction on the driving surface. The Pascal-Tech(TM) chambers deposit, pressurize and then release the load in conjunction with the centrifugal force caused by rotation of the tire. This gripping and quick release action allows for improved traction, Stollings explained.

Available for sale on the web initially, GoClaws can be purchased at www.goclaws.com. The list price for a pair of GoClaws ranges from $169.95 to $269.95 per set for the consumer market. For the commercial market, the list price ranges from $169.95 to $349.95. In Canada, the product is marketed as SnoClaws and is available exclusively at Canadian Tire, a chain of 450 stores located throughout the provinces. Warranty and installation instructions also are available on the website.

New SnoClaws advanced traction system uses super-tough BASF polyurethanes

Easy-to-install alternative to chains and snow tires works in snow, sand, and mud

WYANDOTTE, Mich., March 13, 2003  -- The good news: Winter is almost over. The bad news: Winter will be back and if the next one is anything like the last one, with heavy snow in large parts of the U.S. and Canada, many drivers will find themselves wishing – again -- for something other than chains and snow tires to help them get through.

Thanks to an innovative product called SnoClaws™, their wishes can come true and because SnoClaws also offer superior traction in mud and sand, many drivers won’t have to wait for snow to use them.

SnoClaws are a simple, yet surprisingly advanced, solution to the old problem of driving in snow.  Made exclusively from BASF high-performance polyurethanes, SnoClaws are described by the manufacturer, Flex-Trax™, as an “Advanced Traction System”™ that employs a unique, patented design to make driving in snow easier and less stressful... Unlike tire chains, SnoClaws can be installed in minutes on a car’s wheels -- even if the vehicle is already stuck -- without the need to move the vehicle or remove the tires.

According to Jim Lausch, Business Director, BASF Thermoplastic Urethanes, SnoClaws represents an entirely new synthesis of inventive engineering and rugged material, which differentiates SnoClaws from conventional solutions such as chains and snow tires.

“This is one of those ingenious designs whose apparent simplicity is actually the result of very extensive development and testing. The material is a crucial element, of course, because the device has to be extremely strong and durable, and BASF urethanes more than meet the challenge,” Lausch said.

Lausch explained that among the material characteristics designers were looking for were durability, ease of installation and low weight. Once the specifications for SnoClaws were established, BASF worked closely with Flex-Trax engineers to develop and refine a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that would satisfy the incredibly high performance requirements for this product.

“Because this was a brand-new concept, and a very demanding one, we wanted to work with a materials supplier that brought the highest levels of expertise and experience to the table,” said Tony Bright, inventor and CEO of Flex-Trax. “BASF is the world’s number one supplier of TPUs, and their knowledge and resources, not to mention their excellent product, proved invaluable to the project.”  Flex Trax, Inc. is a member of SEMA.

SnoClaws are available in sizes to fit vehicles from small passenger cars to large trucks.  Distributors will benefit from the fact that, thanks to the product’s adjustable design, only seven sku’s are needed to serve almost the entire retail market, compared to more than 100 sizes and styles of snow chains. SnoClaws are self-cleaning -- which helps to prevent clogging and loss of traction -- and, unlike chains, SnoClaws are road- and vehicle-friendly, so they will not damage roadways or vehicles.

East Coast Plastics, an injection molding company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has been selected by Flex-Trax to manufacture the molded parts. Production of SnoClaws began in February, and they are expected to be in retail stores by early April of 2003.
